Wanting to do more.

Thursday, July 07, 2011 @ 3:44 PM

My name is Micaela. I am seventeen years old, have never been out of the country and live in a suburb that is less than diverse. I don’t have a story about how I went to a third world country and realized that people need help. I was sitting in my tenth grade world history class watching a documentary on the world water crisis when I realized that I didn’t want to sit around and wait for the world to be changed.  I wanted to help change the world.

The concept of people around the world not having simple necessities that they needed to survive was completely foreign to me. I had never taken the time to think about how some people don’t have clothes, clean water, or food. Where I lived everyone had all of those things and it started to almost anger me. I felt as people, we should all have what we need to simply live, and when I realized some people didn’t, I wanted to get involved.

When I found World Clothes Line, all of these thoughts were still circling in my brain. World Clothes Line was doing what I wanted to do, helping. Finding a way to solve this problem. They were clothing the world and I wanted to help. I bought a t-shirt and sweatshirt which was matched and sent to someone in need in the U.S. and Indonesia. I felt good after receiving my purchases but realized this still wasn’t enough. I wanted to do more.

I am now working at World Clothes Line over the summer and trying to learn how I can turn helping people into a lifestyle. I’ve realized I need to be doing something that is important to me, and keeps me motivated, with the rest of my life. I get more than the satisfaction of simply working and not sitting at home over the summer while I’ve been here. I feel as if what I have been doing is making a difference and helping the cause I set out to solve.
